Walker Drains the Democratic Party
Wisconsin became a right-to-work state on May 9th with the stroke of Scott Walker’s pen. Workers there are no longer forced into paying union dues by federal labor law, meaning unions will have to actually earn their financial support.
CWF’s Matt Patterson recently highlighted the impact Walker’s labor reforms will also have on the Democratic Party, which is funded generously by organized labor. In a piece in the Washington Times, Patterson wrote:
“Unions have spent millions fighting Mr. Walker’s reforms. Their failure, and consequent membership plunge, means those unions will no longer have bursting treasuries with which to fund left-wing causes and politicians nationally.
Organized labor is the bank of the Democratic Party. Most Republicans fight the party. Mr. Walker closed the bank.”
Walker’s victories over Big Labor in his blue state has made him one of the most influential Republican politicians in decades, no matter what comes of his presidential ambitions.
