Today, Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform (ATR), joined a number of other prominent conservatives in a coalition letter supporting the nomination of Eugene Scalia for Secretary of Labor. The coalition letter was organized by the Conservative Action Project.

Americans for Tax Reform and the Center for Worker Freedom (CWF) strongly support the nomination of Eugene Scalia for Secretary of Labor because of his distinguished career supporting American workers.

Mr. Scalia began his career as a speechwriter for Education Secretary William J. Bennett after graduating With Distinction from the University of Virginia (Major: Economics; Minor: Political Science). After two years at the Department of Education, he went to law school at the University of Chicago. He graduated cum laude and was editor-in-chief of the University of Chicago Law Review. He then received an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. 

Following his graduation, he served as Special Assistant to U.S. Attorney General William Barr and received the Department’s Edmund J. Randolph Award before joining private practice in Washington, DC and Los Angeles, California. In April 2001, President George W. Bush appointed him as Solicitor of Labor. 

Scalia later became a partner in the Washington, DC office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, where he handled a broad range of labor, employment, appellate and regulatory matters. At the firm, he litigated a number of important cases, including NLRB v. The Boeing Company, Case 19-CA-32431, and Chamber of Commerce of the U.S.A. v. Dep’t of Labor, 885 F.3d 360 (5^thCir. 2018). 

He also co-chaired the firm’s Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice Group. In addition, he was a member of its Labor and Employment Practice Group, which he co-chaired for twelve years, and a member of the firm’s Appellate and Constitutional Law Practice Group. He served on the Executive Committee and its Partnership Evaluation Committee on that Practice Group.

Scalia is a senior fellow of the Administrative Conference of the United States and has served as a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School, as well as an adjunct professor at the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. He is also the author of more than twenty articles on labor and employment law, constitutional law, and other subjects, and has been recognized as a top lawyer by Who’s Who in America, Chambers, The Legal 500, PLC’s Which Lawyer?, The Best Lawyers in America®, and Law360, among others. 

On August 27, 2019, President Donald Trump announced his intent to nominate Eugene Scalia as Secretary of Labor.
