CWF in Forbes
Matt Patterson, Executive Director of the Center for Worker Freedom, had an article published in Forbes on February 10, 2017, addressing New Hampshire legislators about Right-to-Work:
Dear Representatives,
It was an honor to testify in your wonderful state house in Concord on February 8 on behalf of the right-to-work legislation currently before you. My understanding is that the Senate has already passed right-to-work and that the House may take it up as early as February 16.
Having witnessed and participated in the day-long testimony before your Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitative Services Committee, I was appalled at the rank mis-information dispensed by union supporters. I think it important to clear up some basic facts about U.S. labor law in advance of your vote on the 16th, in order that you may make an informed decision on such a weighty matter.
The arguments I heard against right-to-work were few, but repeated over and over and without challenge. The first and most repeated slander was the so-called ‘free rider’ argument which goes something like this: “U.S. labor law requires unions to represent everyone in the workplace; therefore workers who opt out of dues under right-to-work benefit from union representation without having to pay their fair share.”
This argument seems to be taken as gospel by rank-and-file union members and leadership alike. There’s just one problem.
It just ain’t so.
