The 2014 vote to make SEIU the exclusive bargaining agent for all home-based PCAs, while legal under Minnesota’s labor law, was nonetheless unfair by almost any other measure. Only 5,800 people out of 27,000 sent in a ballot, with about 13% of all PCAs (less than 3,500) voting for the union.

On May 24, 2013, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton signed a bill (S.F. 778/H.F. 950) into law that declared personal care assistants (PCAs) “public employees” for collective bargaining purposes, leading to the unionization of thousands of these PCAs.

Much Abood about nothing

As pay back to the unions who supported him during his election, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich unionized personal assistants in 2003.

He accomplished this by issuing an executive order, allowing the state to recognize “personal assistants” as state employees for collective bargaining purposes. The caregivers receive payment through Illinois’ “Rehabilitation Program,” a Medicaid initiative that pays for caretakers of disabled and elderly persons.

On Thursday, June 23, the Center for Worker Freedom signed a coalition letter opposing Big Labor's "Take on Wall Street Campaign." The other 21 signers were recognized conservative groups, including Americans for Tax Reform.
