This week, a hearing began in Fresno, California regarding a labor dispute between farmworkers at Gerawan Farming, Inc. and the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB).

The workers voted in a decertification election last November to kick the United Farm Workers (UFW) out, but the ALRB refuses to count their votes. This is a clear violation of the farmworkers’ civil liberties.

Governor Brown Vetoes Forced Unionization Bill

In a surprise move, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed the California Farm Bill SB-25 on Sunday. The Bill, which had passed both houses of the Legislature, would have made it easier for unions to force farm workers into collective bargaining agreements by essentially abolishing their right to appeal during labor mediation.

Farm workers at Fresno-based Gerawan Farming Inc. do not want to be forced to pay 3 percent of their wages to the United Farm Workers (UFW) union. Last November Gerawan workers held a decertification election, but the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB) is refusing to count the votes in a flagrant attempt to help the UFW rob the workers of their hard-earned money. Workers and their families and supporters will hold a protest rally in front of the ALRB regional office in Visalia on Tuesday, Aug. 26 at 3:00 p.m.
